Algorithms for Right-Sizing Heterogeneous Data Centers

چکیده

Power consumption is a dominant and still growing cost factor in data centers. In time periods with low load, the energy can be reduced by powering down unused servers. We resort to model introduced Lin, Wierman, Andrew Thereska [23, 24] that considers centers identical machines, generalize it heterogeneous d different server types. The operating of depends on its load modeled an increasing, convex function for each type. contrast earlier work, we consider discrete setting, where number active servers must integral. Thereby, seek truly feasible solutions. For homogeneous ( = 1), both offline online problem were solved optimally [3, 4]. this paper, study general time-dependent functions. develop algorithm based work approach which achieves competitive ratio 2 + 1 ϵ any > 0. time-independent functions, 1. There lower bound shown [5], so our nearly optimal. version, give graph-based (1 ϵ)-approximation algorithm. Additionally, able handle time-variable data-center sizes.

Dynamic right - sizing for power - proportional data centers — Extended version

Power consumption imposes a significant cost for data centers implementing cloud services, yet much of that power is used to maintain excess service capacity during periods of low load. This paper investigates how much can be saved by dynamically “right-sizing” the data center by turning off servers during such periods, and how to achieve that saving via an online algorithm. We propose a very g...

Right-Sizing Organizations for Quality

Adequate staff resources are essential for achieving quality environmental, health, and safety (EHS) programs. The technical challenges, internal coordination difficulties, public-relations problems, and so on are rarely insurmountable—if you have sufficient fiscal and human resources to effectively deal with the issues. Without a minimum critical mass of resources, you become consumed with day...

Data Redistribution Algorithms for Heterogeneous Processor Rings

We consider the problem of redistributing data on homogeneous and heterogeneous ring of processors. The problem arises in several applications, each time after that a load-balancing mechanism is invoked (but we do not discuss the load-balancing mechanism itself). We provide algorithms that aim at optimizing the data redistribution, both for uni-directional and bi-directional rings, and we give ...

Power Modelling for Heterogeneous Cloud-Edge Data Centers

Existing power modelling research focuses not on the method used for developing models but rather on the model itself. This paper aims to develop a method for deploying power models on emerging processors that will be used, for example, in cloud-edge data centers. Our research first develops a hardware counter selection method that appropriately selects counters most correlated to power on ARM ...

A high-level energy consumption model for heterogeneous data centers

Data centers consume anywhere between 1.7% and 2.2% of the United States' power. A handful of studies focused on ways of predicting power consumption of computing platforms based on performance events counters. Most of existing power-consumption models retrieve performance counters from hardware, which offer accurate measurement of energy dissipation. Although these models were verified on seve...
